Q&A for Inside SQL Server
“Thanks for writing!”
Updated: 11/6/06
Please note that due to the volume of email received, I am not able to answer all of it. (Maybe if my book sells half a million copies, and I can retire from my day job because of the royalties, I will then be able to spend more time answering your questions!) Before you send me a question, check out my “Q & A” page to see if someone else had the same question. You can also check my blog to see if I’ve discussed the issue there. J
I give first priority to questions directly related to information presented in Inside SQL Server 2005 or my column in SQL Server Magazine. Second priority goes to questions that I think would be of broad general interest, or ones that I am particularly interested in. Third, I consider posting answers to those questions that I know the answer to!
If you have general questions, not related to my writings, you can get free peer support through Microsoft’s public newsgroups. Use any newsreader, connect to the server msnews.microsoft.com, and search for the sqlserver sections. Microsoft support engineers sometimes monitor those forums, and also the MVPs can file and research bugs directly with Microsoft. You can also access these newsgroups through a web browser at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/newsgroups/server/sql.mspx. That page gives you the option of posting questions using a web interface, or opening up a newsgroup through a newsreader. The newsgroup I check most often are:
SQL
Server
SQL Server Programming
SQL Server Connection Issues
SQL Server Tools
SQL Server Setup

Q: When will Inside SQL Server 2005 be
available?
A: OK, now it is out. The first copies were delivered to the Microsoft Press office on 11 October, and it was in stores by the end of the month.

Many people
have asked me when the new book is coming out.
Q: When will Inside SQL Server 2005 be available?
A: The answer has always been: ‘When it’s finished!’ But now it is finished, and all the parts are in the hands of the publisher. I have been told by the good people at MS Press that I should see the book hitting bookshelves by October 20th, or thereabouts.
And thanks for asking…
